Notes: This is one of my favorite Father's Day stories. I extracted it from the first year's HTML for your enjoyment. The music, "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," was played at my brother's, Bill's, funeral and at my Mother's funeral. Dad wanted it played at his funeral. Dad would have appreciated this version of the music because of the accordian/harmonica playing. Bill used to play music for Dad on his harmonica.
Unfortunately, Dad's last wishes were denied by his executor. Also, the executor never informed Fr. Fitzpatrick of Dad's wishes for a Catholic burial. Eventually, I arranged with Fr. Fitzpatrick for the rites to be performed at Dad's tombstone that I had placed next to Mom's tombstone. I'll never forget one year when I sent Mom a Mother's Day card, Dad wanted to know why he didn't get one too. Mother told him that he would get one on Father's Day. And, of course, Dad did. Dad always remembered to give cards on special occasions. When Mother died, Dad placed a valentine in her casket because he had bought it for her for that February before she died as the result of a fire.
This year, 2008, is special for me because my cousin, Larry, sent me an e-mail that I had forgotten. I have included it below because it reminds me how fortunate I have been to have had the outlook on life that was given to me by my parents. Enjoy!

Daddy's Poem Her hair was up in a pony tail, her favorite dress tied with a bow. Today was Daddy's Day at school, and she couldn't wait to go. But her mommy tried to tell her, that she probably should stay home. Why the kids might not understand, if she went to school alone. But she was not afraid; she knew just what to say. What to tell her classmates of why he wasn't there today. But still her mother worried, for her to face this day alone. And that was why once again, she tried to keep her daughter home. But the little girl went to school eager to tell them all. About a dad she never sees a dad who never calls. There were daddies along the wall in back, for everyone to meet. Children squirming impatiently, anxious in their seats One by one the teacher called a student from the class. To introduce their daddy, as seconds slowly passed. At last the teacher called her name, every child turned to stare. Each of them was searching, a man who wasn't there. "Where's her daddy at?" she heard a boy call out. "She probably doesn't have one," another student dared to shout. And from somewhere near the back, she heard a daddy say, "Looks like another deadbeat dad, too busy to waste his day." The words did not offend her, as she smiled up at her Mom. And looked back at her teacher, who told her to go on. And with hands behind her back, And though you cannot meet him, You see he was a policeman And to her mothers amazement, "I know you're with me Daddy," |

Subject: Another Perspective One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?" The son replied, "It was great, Dad." "Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked. "Oh yeah," said the son. "So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father. The son answered: "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them." The boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are." Isn't perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have. Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends! "Life is too short and friends are too few." Please visit the Dad's Day companion sites. DadsDay1.htm DadsDay2.htm |
